The Broome County Sheriff’s Office has been responding to multiple instances of larcenies from motor vehicles as well as thefts of motor vehicles. The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public to be aware of the dangers of leaving valuables in their vehicles, including keys to the car itself. Take all valuables including pocketbooks, wallets, cellular phones, laptops, tablets and loose change with you when you park your vehicle. Don’t use your vehicle to store Christmas gifts or, if you do, take precautions and keep valuables hidden and out of sight. Make sure all windows are rolled up and doors locked when the vehicle is not in use. Do not leave the ignition key readily accessible or in the vehicle. Petty crimes, such as larcenies from vehicles, are usually committed by persons looking for opportunistic situations. If the vehicle is locked, or if there is nothing of value within it, the potential thief will most usually move on.
