A 21-year-old woman from Adams, New York, was arrested Thursday after a pursuit through multiple jurisdictions. She’s been charged with Driving While Ability Impaired with Drugs and issued 14 traffic citations, with more charges likely.
On April 4 at approximately 6:02 p.m., New York State Police at Binghamton were dispatched to a 911 call reporting a wrong-way driver traveling west in the eastbound lanes of Route 17 in Binghamton. A trooper responded and observed a gray 2005 Volvo XC70 which then turned around and was traveled west in the westbound lanes of Route 17.
The trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop but the operator failed to comply. The operator was identified as Kayla Vanderpool, age 21 of Adams, drove at speeds of 110 miles per hour to avoid troopers. Vanderpool then struck a 2006 BMW 330I while on Route 201 in Vestal. The trooper terminated the pursuit and checked on the occupant of the BMW, who was not injured.
A trooper monitoring the pursuit, who is assigned to the barracks in Owego, observed Vanderpool on the Vestal Parkway and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Vanderpool continued to disregard the trooper and failed to comply. Vanderpool committed several traffic offenses traveling through several jurisdictions and striking at least two other vehicles. She’s accused of driving recklessly, speeding at approximately 110 mph, running red lights, failing to stop at a stop sign, moving from lane unsafely and leaving the scene of an accident.
The pursuit came to a conclusion in Owego at Williams and Front streets where Vanderpool struck a patrol vehicle at a low speed and was taken into custody.
Vanderpool was taken to Binghamton General Hospital for minor injuries. She has been charged with the felonies of Reckless Endangerment, possessing a Forged Instrument in the second degree, and the misdemeanors of Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle. Vanderpool has been issued over a dozen traffic tickets in multiple jurisdictions for Speeding, Reckless Driving, Failure to Comply, Passing a Red Signal, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign and Moved from Lane Unsafely.
The investigation is still on-going and investigators are still piecing details together. More charges are expected.
