A nor’easter moved slowly up the east coast from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday. The storm system produced very heavy snowfall across parts of the Southern Tier in New York and the Northern Tier of Pennsylavania.
The official total of 40 inches of snow measured by the National Weather Service at Greater Binghamton Airport was the highest snowfall ever from a two-day storm reported by NWS Binghamton. The record was 35.8 inches on March 14-15, 2017.
It was only one of three significant measurements from the massive nor’easter storm, which the Weather Service had forecast for several days before the snow started Wednesday afternoon.
The one-day snowfall on Thursday was 26.4 inches — the second highest measurement for any calendar day except March 14, 2017, when 31.4 inches of snow fell in one day.
The official and public measurements from this once-in-every-seven-decades snowstorm varied wildly in the Southern Tier and Northern Tier of Pennsylvania.
