On the roughly one-year anniversary of the first announcement of a confirmed case of COVID-19, Tioga County reached the dubious distinction of reaching a cumulative total of 3,000 confirmed cases. By percentage, approximately 6.23 percent of Tioga County’s latest Census-reported population of 48,203 people have been diagnoised with COVID-19 in the past year.

The virus has contribued to 70 deaths of Tioga residents since last March. Approximately 50 percent of those deaths can be estimated as nursing home residents. Before the health department stopped providing specific data about residency — nursing home or general population — of deaths, the first 30 deaths of Tioga residents were reported as nursing home residents and others deaths were subsqently reported as nursing home residents.

No specific personal information about the deceased was reported by the health department to respect the privacy of the individual and family.
