Broome County Sheriff’s Office investigating threat against Maine Endwell School District

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating an incident involving the Maine Endwell School District where information was received by an unknown person threatening violence against one of the schools.

According to a press release, on May 23, the Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Maine Endwell School District about a message received from an unknown person through a tip-line app threatening an act of violence at one of the school district buildings, including a photo of a handgun in the message.

Deputies and detectives immediately responded to the school and began investigating the incident. Several tips have been received from community members providing additional details and possible perpetrators of the message.

The Sheriff’s Office is working closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Broome-Tioga BOCES and the Maine Endwell School District to identify the perpetrator and to ensure the safety and security of all buildings within the district.

There have been no further threats of violence since the initial incident on May 23. No other school districts have been implicated in this threat.

“Our children’s safety is paramount,” said Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar. “Our schools must remain safe and secure places for them to learn and grow, and we treat threats to that safety and security with the utmost concern. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office will provide updates to the public as this ongoing investigation proceeds.”
