An elderly man was seriously injured in a car accident after he swerved to avoid another vehicle in the Town of Chemung on Tuesday.
According to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at around 3:07 p.m. on State Route 427.
During the investigation it was determined that an elderly male driver was following an uninvolved vehicle eastbound on State Route 427. The uninvolved vehicle, slowed to make a left-hand turn into a driveway on State Route 427 when the car driven by the elderly man swerved off the south side of the roadway, into the ditch and then rolled and overturned approximately 200 feet later.
It is believed at this time that the victim did not see the vehicle he was following preparing to make a turn and swerved at the last minute to avoid a rearend collision.
The elderly man was the only occupant of the vehicle. He sustained a head injury and was transported to Robert Packer Hospital where he remains in the intensive care unit as of this date.
