New York State has fired 2,000 correctional officers who refused to return to work and said they cannot be hired for state positions going forward.
The state declared the strike over, but there were still some officers on the picket line for the 23rd day on Tuesday.
A deal was announced on Saturday between the Department of Corrections and the union, which included changes to overtime rules and other provisions.
Gov. Kathy Hochul said that 10,000 security personnel have returned to duty in correction facilities across the state. There are also more than 6,000 National Guard members still deployed to help with security.
