Heavy rain and flooding has caused major damage and shut down Route 38 in Newark Valley for several hours on Sunday.
Route 38 between Rock Street and Mill Street was shut down due to flooding. It was cleared at around 12:30 a.m. today.
A state of emergency has been declared in Newark Valley.
Newark Valley High School is open for anyone in the community who needs to take shelter.
The Owego Church of the Nazarene has also opened its doors as an emergency meeting point and temporary shelter for families who have been displaced.
The church is asking for donations of the following items:
Bottled water
Non-perishable food (allergy free if possible)
Blankets and sheets
Air mattresses and sleeping bags
Hygiene products (soap, toothpaste, diapers, etc.)
Flashlights and batteries
Towels and clothing (clean and in good condition)
Fans
Electronic chargers (iPhone and Android)
Please bring any donations to the church kid’s wing building/gymnasium as soon as possible. Every contribution, big or small, will make a difference to those in need during this difficult time.
