Two Pennsylvania State Troopers are recovering after being shot Thursday morning during a welfare check in Susquehanna County.
State Police say Troopers Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins are in stable condition after a man opened fire with a rifle around 11 a.m. on Route 171 in Thompson Township. Perechinsky applied a tourniquet to Jenkins before a third trooper evacuated them.
The shooter, 61-year-old Carmine Faino, was killed after refusing police commands. Investigators say he had already shot and killed his neighbor, 57-year-old Lori Wasko.
An EMT responding to the scene was caught in the crossfire and crashed their vehicle — they’re also in stable condition.
Colonel Christopher Paris says the troopers are lucky to be alive. They’re the fifth and sixth troopers shot in the line of duty since January 2023. Only one of those shootings was fatal.
