New NYSP initiative to help with autism interactions

The New York State Police are launching a new initiative to help improve communication between Troopers and individuals with autism.

It’s called the Autism Awareness Visor Card Program, and it’s designed to make public interactions safer and less stressful for everyone involved.

The visor card includes simple visual icons Troopers can use to communicate more clearly with people on the autism spectrum, helping reduce confusion or fear during traffic stops or other encounters.

Every State Police patrol vehicle will carry the cards, and members of the public can also download and print them directly from the State Police website.

The program will roll out statewide in the coming weeks.
