One person was killed and two people were injured in a pair of car accidents in Nichols on Saturday morning.
According to the New York State Police, a BMW hit a deer just after midnight on State Route 17 west near Tioga Downs. The driver pulled onto the right shoulder, but the vehicle remained partially in the right lane. The driver and three occupants exited the vehicle.
A Suzuki sedan then struck the rear end of the BMW, pushing it forward into two of the occupants. The Suzuki continued off the roadway and caught fire. The driver and sole occupant of the Suzuki was able to get out of the car.
State troopers and Greater Valley EMS initiated life-saving measures to one of the occupants of the BMW, but the individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second occupant of the BMW and the driver of the Suzuki were transported to the Robert Packer Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
State Route 17 West was closed until just after 5 a.m. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
The identity of the victim has not been released.
