PennDOT urges caution for possible Saturday freeze

PennDOT is warning motorists across Bradford and Tioga counties to watch for possible icy spots Saturday as temperatures fall and the region sees its first potential winter weather of the season. The agency says bridges and overpasses may freeze before other roads. Drivers are urged to slow down, leave extra following distance, avoid cruise control on slick roads and clear snow or ice from their vehicles before traveling.

PennDOT District 3 issued the safety reminder Friday for its nine-county region, which includes Bradford and Tioga counties. The advisory focuses on the possibility of rapidly changing pavement conditions as temperatures fall. Bridges and overpasses can become slick before nearby roads because they lose heat from both above and below.

The agency recommends giving plow trucks and other vehicles additional room, avoiding sudden maneuvers and preparing vehicles before travel. Motorists should remove ice or snow that could fall from a vehicle and should not use cruise control on snow-covered or icy pavement. The notice is a precaution for Saturday travel, not a report of a current road closure.
