Pennsylvania State Police have received a national forensic science award for a statewide Rapid DNA program that helps investigators develop DNA leads in hours instead of waiting weeks for traditional laboratory processing.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police presented the August Vollmer Leadership in Forensic Science Award to the department. The award recognizes law enforcement agencies that use forensic technology in innovative ways to advance investigations and improve the collection and analysis of evidence.

State Police say the Pennsylvania network includes 15 fully automated genetic analyzers positioned across the commonwealth. Since the program began, the equipment has processed more than 354 samples, developed 190 DNA profiles and produced 163 matches that aided State Police investigations.

The program expanded in 2026 to give municipal police departments access to Rapid DNA capabilities for qualifying time-sensitive cases. State Police say the statewide system serves urban and rural communities, with standardized policies, training and centralized oversight intended to keep operations consistent and maintain scientific quality standards.

Rapid DNA is designed to complement, not replace, traditional forensic laboratory work. The faster process can provide investigators with an early lead while laboratory personnel continue handling complex cases and full forensic examinations.

Acting State Police Commissioner Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens said the award reflects the department’s effort to make advanced forensic technology available to law enforcement agencies across Pennsylvania. The department described the program as the first statewide network of its kind in the nation.

The award is named for August Vollmer, a policing pioneer who promoted the use of fingerprinting, crime laboratories and other scientific tools in investigations. State Police said the recognition also highlights cooperation among department personnel and local law enforcement partners who helped expand the technology.
