The ‘Business Insider’ web site has named Binghamton one of the 5 ‘Most Depressing Cities In America’.
Their rankings are based on a new Gallup poll, the key factor is a secular decline in jobs.
They identified five cities that ranked in the bottom ten for “satisfaction with community” and “optimism about the future.”
The most depressing cities are former industrial centers in upstate New York and the Rust Belt.
They stated “It’s been a hard few decades for Binghamton, which increased total employment only 0.9% from 1980 to 2005. During this period manufacturing jobs declined 56%”.
They found 76.1% of Binghamton residents ‘Satisfied’ and 31% ‘optimistic.
The other four cities named were Buffalo, Youngstown Ohio, Toledo Ohio, and Flint Michigan.
