A Cortland man was arrested Monday by the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division and charged with Scheme to Defraud in the 1st Degree. During a 6 month time frame, while employed at a Town of Triangle business, 29 year old Shawn M. Mead allegedly defrauded at least 13 people out of approximately $400 in cash, food and clothing gifts and loans, by false pretenses.
Mead repeatedly falsely represented that his young daughter was sick with cancer and ultimately died from the cancer, and as a result, Mead received the donations, gifts and loans from the 13 people, while the child was never diagnosed with cancer and is alive and well.
Mead was arrested in the Town of Dickenson, released and ordered to appear for arraignment in the Town of Triangle on April 25, 2011.
