This might be a first in the Southern Tier during the coronavirus crisis … an essential retail store was ordered to close because it violated Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive order to maintain social distancing in public places.

Lowe’s in Big Flats near Elmira in Chemung County was shut down Sunday for non-compliance but will reopen today, after an upper level Lowe’s executive filed a plan with the Chemung County health department to fix the violations. County executive Christopher Moss said Lowe’s had been warned several times verbally and in writing about the violations.

Moss said essential retail stores have a responsibility to ensure their customers and employees are kept as safe as possible from getting or spreading the virus.

At last report, Chemung County had 77 confirmed cases of the virus. In nearby Tompkins County, 123 positive tests and 94 people have recovered.
