Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday that he will resign, not immediately, but effective in 14 days. It. Gov. Kathy Hochul will become governor.
Cuomo’s resignation comes amid national calls for him to step down after an independent investigation found he sexually sexually harassed at least 11 women in and out of state government.
The third-term Democratic governor became increasingly isolated as state Assembly members agreed to move toward impeachment and one-time allies fell from his rank of supporters following last week’s report from state Attorney General Letitia James that detailed 11 women’s claims of sexual harassment.
Cuomo has denied behaving inappropriately with any of the women who have accused him of harassment. He had resisted calls for his resignation from top Democrats including President Biden.
His resignation will take effect in 14 days. Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul will replace Cuomo.
