Residents in the Southern Tier looking to keep unwanted and unneeded medications from falling into the wrong hands potentially leading to dangerous or even tragic consequences, can safely dispose of them between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 29, at select collection sites during the federal Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
Local agencies in Broome, Tioga, and Chemung counties will host collection sites in an effort to keep communities clean and safe.
In Broome County, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office will accept any medications from aspirin to controlled substances including sharps at these five locations:
Broome County Sheriff’s Office – 155 Lt. VanWinkle Dr., Binghamton
Johnson City Elks Lodge – 4212 Watson Blvd., Johnson City
Whitney Point Fire Department – 2665 Main St., Whitney Point
United Health Services – 4417 Vestal Parkway East, Vestal
West Windsor Fire Department – 9 Karla Dr., Windsor
In Tioga County, the Tioga Advocacy Support and Prevention Coalition (Tioga ASAP) in conjunction with the Tioga County Sheriff’s Department will host a drive up and drop off event at two locations:
Tioga ASAP’s office — 72 North Ave., Owego, in the parking lot next to the Owego Police Department.
Valley United Presbyterian Church — 459 Park Ave., Waverly.
In Chemung County, the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office will accept medications, ointments, sprays and sharps with no questions asked at either of two Elmira locations: the Southport Volunteer Fire Department, 1001 Carl St. and the West Elmira Volunteer Fire Department, 1299 W. Water St. Residents are asked to keep the medications in their original containers with the labels intact, however, they may blacken out their name.
