OWEGO, N.Y. — On August 7, 1984, law enforcement agencies across the United States, along with neighborhood watch groups, civic groups, state and regional crime prevention associations, and volunteers came together for a celebration of community and to build positive relationships within the neighborhoods they served. In the almost four decades since, the event now known as National Night Out has blossomed into block parties, parades, cookouts, youth activities, safety demonstrations and much more, continuing to foster camaraderie within neighborhoods through police-community partnerships.
On Tuesday, August 2, 2022, local law enforcement, Fire, EMS, businesses, and citizens will come together for an evening of free fun as the Owego Police Department along with various partner organizations host Tioga County’s National Night Out from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Marvin Park, 50 West Main St., Owego, across from the Price Chopper Plaza.
Of the free event, Owego Police Chief Joseph Kennedy stated, “The purpose of this event is to promote strong police-community partnership and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live and work,” and added, “We expect a strong turnout for this event.”
Included in the evening are free hot dogs, drinks, popcorn and ice pops, live music by Devon Lawton & the In-Laws, free face painting, a bounce house and dunk tank, a car cruise-in, a K-9 demonstration, helicopter landing, and a touch a truck with local business participation and a variety of police, fire, EMS, and military style trucks on hand. The Friends of the Evergreen Cemetery will also be donating their Cornhole panels for use, allowing for a challenging course with friends.
The events will take place within the infield of Marvin Park with parking around the perimeter.
Owego’s Police Benevolent Association (PBA) is the event sponsor and donations are always welcome. To make a donation, send it to Owego PBA, 90 Temple St., Owego, N.Y. 13827. You may also contact Chief Kennedy by calling (607) 687-2234, ext. 2603, or email him at [email protected].
