On April 12, at approximately 3:05 p.m., New York State Police at Sidney arrested Steven P. Carpenter, age 26, of Niagara Falls, for the misdemeanors of Criminal Trespass in the second degree, Resisting Arrest and Criminal Impersonation in the second degree.

Troopers were assisting the village of Sidney police with an investigation at the Speedway on State Routes 7 and 8 in the town of Bainbridge. During the investigation, troopers spotted the suspect matching the description on a bicycle on State Route 8 on Kelley Road. The suspect, later identified as Carpenter, turned into a driveway on Kelley Road and ran inside the house of an unsuspecting homeowner, then out a window, across the road and down an embankment and out of sight. Other patrols responded to the area and Carpenter was ultimately located with the assistance of one of the residents that was inside the home on Kelley Road.

Carpenter originally gave troopers a false name and date of birth. It was also later determined that Carpenter is wanted on a parole warrant from Steuben County. Carpenter was transported to the village of Sidney police department to answer to charges from the original investigation. He was then turned over to New York State Police where he was issued appearance tickets to the town of Bainbridge court on May 21. Carpenter was remanded to the Chenango County jail and held on no bail for the parole warrant.
