New York State Police Cracking Down on Illegal Fireworks on July 4 Weekend

On July 1, 2020 at approximately 3:09 p.m., New York State Police arrested Gerrod L. Darling, age 48 of Homer, NY for the misdemeanor of Unlawfully Dealing with Fireworks and Dangerous Fireworks. Troopers initiated a traffic stop on Interstate 81 in the town of Kirkwood when they observed a vehicle and traffic violation. An investigation revealed that Darling was in possession of several large boxes of illegal fireworks. Darling was arrested and released on an appearance ticket to the town of Kirkwood court on July 23, 2020.


On Tuesday, June 30, New York State Police arrested two people for the misdemeanor of Unlawfully Dealing with Fireworks and Dangerous Fireworks. A trooper initiated a traffic stop on Interstate 81 in the town of Kirkwood just after 1 p.m., when he observed a vehicle and traffic violation. An investigation resulted in the discovery of illegal fireworks totaling over $500.  Both the driver and passenger were arrested. They are identified as Xavier Santos, age 31 of Syracuse, NY and Aristides Lopez-Robles, age 34 of Syracuse, NY. Both men were released on appearance tickets to the town of Kirkwood court on July 15.


On Sunday, June 28 at approximately 12:51 p.m., New York State Police arrested Casey E. Jean, age 25, of Tully, NY, for the misdemeanor of Unlawfully Dealing with Fireworks and Dangerous Fireworks. A trooper initiated a traffic stop on Interstate 81 in the Town of Dickinson after he observed a vehicle and traffic violation. An investigation yielded numerous illegal fireworks in Jean’s possession totaling over $2,700. He was arrested, processed then released on an appearance ticket to the town of Dickinson court on July 14.

Three people have been arrested after the discovery of illegal fireworks in their vehicle. On June 27, 2020, New York State Police arrested Leon P. Tryon, age 29 of Wolcott, NY and Garett R. Lavalley, age 25 of Wolcott, NY.  They were each charged with the misdemeanor of Unlawfully Dealing with Fireworks and Dangerous Fireworks.  A third person was charged with a violation level offense for Possessing a Firework or Dangerous Firework. At approximately 12:00 p.m., a trooper monitoring traffic on Interstate 81 in Kirkwood observed Tyron operating a vehicle and make a vehicle and traffic infraction.  A traffic stop was initiated and an investigation led to the discovery of $900 worth of illegal fireworks. All three men were arrested, processed and issued appearance tickets to the town of Kirkwood court on July 15.


On June 26, 2020, New York State Police arrested Holly M. Cornell, age 35 of Berkshire, NY for the misdemeanor of Unlawfully Dealing with Fireworks and Dangerous Fireworks. At approximately 3:30 p.m., a trooper monitoring traffic on Interstate 81 in the town of Kirkwood initiated a traffic stop after he observed Cornell make a vehicle and traffic violation while operating a vehicle.  An investigation with the assistance of K9 Matti, troopers located over $2,000 worth of illegal fireworks in Cornell’s possession. Cornell was arrested and processed at SP Binghamton.  She was released on appearance tickets to the town of Kirkwood court on July 7, 2020.
