New York State Public High School Athletic Association Executive Director Robert Zayas submitted a report Tuesday to the New York State High School Sports Athlethic Association’s Central Committee, saying no COVID-19 restrictions will be imposed on athletic competitions in the upcoming 2021-22 school term.

That applies not only to regular season games but also to state championships in the fall, winter and spring, Zayas also reported Tuesday. By default, that means sectional championship games will be played to determine each section’s team in the state tournament.

Practices for fall sports may start on Monday, Aug. 23.

Football was played this past spring in New York with a limited schedule based on geography not on Class designations, Section 4 championship games were cancelled, many schedulsd games were cancelled due to COVID-19 precautions and some schools were unable to field teams to play a full six-game schedule.
