Owego Free Academy 2006 Graduate, Juan “Saucy” Peña, is quickly becoming one of the top sound engineers in the music industry. Juan was the vocal engineer on the current #1 (Jason Derulo – Savage Love) and #2 (BTS – Dynamite) songs on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
On Thursday and Friday, Juan joined Owego Apalachin Middle School and Owego Free Academy students during their virtual classes on Zoom with OA music teacher, Ryan Cirbus. Juan spoke with the students about growing up in Owego, attending Broome Community College and SUNY Purchase, and his career as an audio engineer. He will be demonstrating what his role was with the song Dynamite, by showing the raw vocal files and what he did to them in order to bring that song to life. In addition to his work with BTS, Juan has also worked with some prominent names in the world of hip hop, and has credits with other singles that have charted on the Hot 100 charts.

The conversation was centered around Juan’s career and the steps he took (beginning at Owego Elementary School) to get to where he is now. Students learned about the world of sound recording (which is what Mr. Cirbus is currently teaching to his general music classes), the rigors of the music industry and the importance of hard work and never passing up an opportunity.
