A day after the Sayre School Board voted to stop merger talks, the Athens School Board followed suit at a meeting on Tuesday night.

In a 5-4 vote, the Athens School Board rejected a resolution to continue the conversation about a potential merger with the Sayre Area School District.

The votes by both school boards have seemingly ended a multi-year pursuit of a potential merger between the two neighboring districts – which included a merger feasibility study at a cost of $135,000.

The feasibility study produced several options for both school districts to consider. Once the study was completed, the next step was expected to be the two school boards coming up with an official merger proposal for all 18 school board members to vote on.

However, that will no longer happen as the two boards have narrowly decided to end all merger talks.
