BeST Transit unveiled its new propane powered buses during an event on Wednesday in Greens Landing.

According to the Morning Times, the move to propane auto gas is expected to save BeST Transit between $10,000 and $15,000 per vehicle each year in operating costs.

A $300,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is being used to convert 10 buses to propane.

In phase one of this project, BeST will have 17 propane-powered buses or about 25 percent of its fleet.

Pennsylvania Secretary of Transportation Mike Carroll made the trip to Bradford County for Wednesday’s announcement.

“Public transit is available in every PA county, and an average of 65% of the people who use it have no other option. I was pleased to join partners to celebrate PennDOT and local investments to make propane fueling possible at BEST Transit. The transition will allow BeST to save costs with a cleaner fuel source while serving riders in Bradford, Sullivan, and Tioga counties,” Carroll said in a Facebook post.
