Roadwork is expected to take place in the coming days to help fix a large divot in the roadway along Riverside Drive in Athens Township, which is near where three people were killed in a crash on Tuesday.

Since the crash, Valley residents have expressed concerns over the condition of the roadway, saying it’s been a problem for years.

According to WETM-TV, a PennDOT spokesperson said the piece of road on Riverside Drive, just north of Brown Road, has had issues for more than a decade. It had repair work done as far back as 2015 because it sits along an embankment failure with gradual settlement.

The settlement caused the dip in the roadway and has been patched, but was made worse after additional settlement occurred this winter.

Following the crash on Tuesday, PennDOT placed a bump sign, warning panels and flashing lights at the location.

PennDOT is planning on starting the roadwork this Saturday.
