A school bus was involved in a car accident on Tuesday in Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

The school bus was rear-ended by a black sedan on Route 49 in Knoxville on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Knoxville-Deerfield Volunteer Fire Company, there were 26 students on board at the time of the crash. No one on the bus was seriously injured, but the driver of the car was airlifted to the hospital.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing.

Here is a statement from Northern Tioga School District Superintendent Kristopher A. Kaufman:

Good evening, Northern Tioga families

During the afternoon bus run, one of our buses was involved in an accident with another vehicle. In order to be respectful of the privacy of those involved, I will not share any additional details. Suffice it to say, it is an unsettling experience for the parents and students involved.

I would like to share my thanks, however. As unsettling as the accident scene can be, our students remained calm and followed direction very well. Additionally, thank you the parents. Your patience and understanding was appreciated and allowed us to coordinate communication to better inform you of your child’s status.

We are very fortunate for the volunteers within the valley, neighboring communities, and our health system partners. Not only did you provide for any medical needs, you also contributed to keeping the students calm. Your quick response is always appreciated.

Our own Northern Tioga School District staff and administrators were also instrumental in making note of student bus riders, coordinating with schools and central office for communication to parents, and tracking students-whether being released to parents or for transport to the hospital. I would include in this, Debora’s Transportation and the bus driver. Your response in the first moments of the accident helped guide the rest of the response.

We are grateful to the UPMC Wellsboro staff for receiving our students and keeping the process orderly and making sure that our students were well taken care of.

It truly takes a village in situations like this.

Have a great rest of your evening.

Kristopher A. Kaufman, Superintendent
