The Corning-Painted Post School District has proposed a nearly $147 million dollar budget with a 7.89 percent tax levy increase.
If the budget passes, taxes will go up roughly $180 on a home valued at $200,000.
The proposed tax increase is over New York State’s 3.23 percent limit, meaning the budget will need to pass by a 60 percent super majority.
According to WENY-TV, the Corning School Board said rising inflation, health insurance costs and interest on outstanding debt are some of the reasons for the tax increase.
Without the increase, the school board said students and staff could lose essential resources including school resource officers, before and after school programs, summer school, modified sports program and band.
The school board voted to approve the tentative budget on Wednesday.
There will be a public hearing on Tuesday, May 13th at 6:30 p.m. in the Corning High School cafeteria.
The budget vote will take place on May 20th. Polls will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
