Elmira man arrested following report of multiple gunshots, short pursuit

An Elmira man was arrested following an investigation into multiple gunshots in the area of West Gray Street and Guinnip Avenue late Thursday evening.

Elmira police responded to the scene around 10:42 p.m. where they found spent bullet casings and a loaded 9mm handgun. Police had also been notified about two vehicles seen fleeing the area. One of the vehicles was found nearby and fled when police tried to stop it. The driver, 19-year-old Christopher J. Brumfield, ended up leading police on a short vehicle pursuit and then a foot pursuit, but was caught and arrested, according to Elmira police.

Brumfield was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a class C felony, as well as numerous traffic violations.

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, West Elmira Police Department, Elmira Heights Police Department, New York State Police, and the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation.
