New Elmira hockey team draws over 1,300 fans in first weekend

The new hockey team that calls Elmira home had its first games at the LECOM Events Center over the weekend and drew over 1,300 fans on Friday and Saturday.

The Elmira Aviators, who play in the North American Hockey League, drew 839 fans to its home opener on Friday night against the visiting New Hampshire Mountain Kings.

On Saturday night, the Aviators attendance dropped to 485 fans, which was a 45 percent drop from Friday.

The Aviators attendance over a two-day span ranked fifth out of nine teams in the league who already had their home openers.
