The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a phone delivery scam that has been circulating recently.
The sheriff’s office said that the new scam involves an unprompted delivery of “free” cell phones and/or SIM cards, framed as SNAP benefits.
In the delivery are activation instructions that require the victim to enter personal identifying information, which the scammer then uses for fraudulent purchases after the device locks, according to the sheriff’s office.
Residents should be aware that these deliveries are a scam, and the sheriff’s office wants to remind people not to disclose any personal or payment information without verifying the identity or confirming the purpose.
People who have any questions regarding the scam are asked to reach out to their local law enforcement office.
