The National Weather Service at Binghamton clocked wind gusts close to 40 mph per hour this morning while the Elmira-Corning office recorded wind speed in excess of 40 mph. Meanwhile, in the Buffalo region, near and over hurricane force wind gusts were measured. Early today, NYSEG reported more than 32,000 customers without power. Locally, Chemung had the biggest impact, followed by Broome County. Just a handful of outages were reported in Tioga and Tompkins Counties. NYSEG said in its latest statement that more than 2,500 line, tree and service and support personnel are responding to this event. In addition to company and contract resources, the utility has obtained resources from Canada, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Jersey. A High Wind Warning remains in effect.
