A one-car accident in Afton this weekend proved to be fatal. Early Sunday morning, the State Police at Norwich investigated the accident which took place on Afton Lake Road, and found that 22-year-old Ryan Lewis of Harpursville was traveling northbound when he lost control of his vehicle along a curve on the road, went off the road and struck a tree along the passenger side. The front seat passenger, 24-year-old Joelyn Sines, also of Harpursville, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers in the backseat, 22-year-old Mitchell Birch and 22-year-old Caleb Gregory, both of Afton, were taken to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City where they remain in stable condition. Lewis has been charged with vehicular manslaughter in the second degree as well as driving while intoxicated. He was also transported to Wilson Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Afton court at a later date.
