The New York State Comptroller says the state’s overtime pay continued on its costly upward trend during the past year. According to comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, New York’s overtime pay rose close to 11 percent, up to $529 million this past year. Overtime costs for the state have increased significantly since major workforce cuts began in 2009. In the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities, DiNapoli says the office saw an average of seven hours of overtime paid to an employee each two-week pay period. The overall staff size dropped by nearly 3,000 workers since 2008. The Office of Mental Health, along with the department that runs the prisons and parole, accounted for 67 percent of overtime as well.
