Milan man facing federal charge for alleged $350K benefit theft

A 75-year-old Milan man was charged with federal wire fraud for allegedly stealing more than $350,000 in Social Security and Veterans benefits. 

Between April 2005 and March 2022, Richard Burke withdrew $350,634.23 in benefit payments from his deceased mother’s bank account, according to Acting U.S. Attorney John Gurganus with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.  

The maximum penalty for this crime is 20 years in jail and a fine, along with supervised release. 

The U.S. Social Security Administration and Department of Veterans Affairs carried out the investigation. The Office of Inspector General and Assistant U.S. Attorney Robin Zenzinger are prosecuting the case.
