The Broome County Sheriff’s Office has announced the cause of death of the female inmate who died in the Broome County Jail last year.

According to the sheriff’s office, Chelsey Davis died from chronic alcohol use with hepatic cirrhosis. Contributing factors were listed as hemorrhagic pancreas, cardiac hypertrophy and atherosclerotic coronary disease.

Davis passed away within hours of entering the jail back in October.

A toxicology report found no alcohol or controlled substances in her system at the time of her death.

Both the internal investigation at the Broome County Correctional Facility and an investigation from the NYS Office of Attorney General found no clinical or administrative malfeasance by the corrections or medical staff. The report from the New York State Commission on Corrections has not been completed.

“On behalf of the men and women of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, our hearts remain with the family of Chelsey Davis during this incredibly difficult time,” said Sheriff Fred Akshar. “This was the first death our administration had encountered, but I hope Chelsey’s family can find some comfort in knowing that our medical and correctional staff performed admirably and with vigilance, doing everything they could to save Chelsey’s life. We have remained in contact with Chelsey’s family throughout this investigation, and we are grateful for their approval to release the results. We also thank the community for their patience as we strive to be as transparent as possible, while also respecting the family’s wishes during these heartbreaking circumstances.”

The family of Chelsey Davis released the following statement:

“Chelsey’s tragic death stemmed from emotional trauma and a resulting depression that led to chronic alcohol abuse. Our family prays that the community respects our privacy during this difficult time.”
