Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham said the firefighter was transported to Wilson Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Two other Binghamton firefighters were injured during the incident. They are being treated at Wilson Hospital and are currently in stable condition.

According to the Owego Fire Department, a MAYDAY call was issued reporting multiple trapped firefighters during the incident.

Mayor Kraham issued the following statement:

“This is an unspeakable tragedy, and our hearts are broken for the firefighter’s family.  I ask us to all say a prayer for the entire Binghamton Fire Department community and our city.

Every day, our firefighters brave dangerous situations to protect citizens and keep our community safe. The men and women who dedicate their lives to this work are heroes.

Tonight, the City of Binghamton mourns a fallen hero who made the ultimate sacrifice.  We pray for a speedy recovery for the two injured firefighters and carry the entire department in our hearts.”

Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar released the following statement:

“The entire Broome County Sheriff’s Office family offers our deepest condolences and prayers for the family, friends and colleagues of the Binghamton firefighter who lost his life last night in the line of duty serving our community. Our prayers are also with the two injured firefighters currently recovering after last night’s fire.

Our emergency responders put their own lives at risk every day to help save the lives of our friends and neighbors, and on days like today, no words can adequately express our gratitude for their sacrifice.

I’ve spoken to the Mayor and offered our resources to the residents of Binghamton and have spoken to BFD President Holleran as well to offer our prayers and condolences to his entire team.

Thank you to all those who responded, as well as the EMTs and dispatchers for their quick action and coordination during last night’s harrowing events.”

The investigation into the fire is ongoing.

The Binghamton Fire Department is being assisted on the investigation by the Binghamton Police Department and New York State Fire Investigators.
