A Binghamton motorcyclist is facing multiple charges, including animal cruelty, after fleeing police with his dog in his lap in the Town of Kirkwood.
On Saturday, October 5, at approximately 8:31 p.m., Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol observed motorcycle without a license plate traveling north on Interstate Route 81 near Exit 3. The deputy attempted a traffic stop, activating lights and siren behind the vehicle, but the motorcycle operator failed to comply.
Instead, the motorcycle took the Exit 3 off ramp onto Colesville Road, ignoring multiple red lights and failing to signal as made its way to State Route 17 eastbound. As road patrol pursued, the motorcycle eventually had a mechanical failure and came to a stop near Exit 76 on Route 17.
As patrols approached the vehicle, it became apparent that the operator had been carrying an unsecured small-to-medium-sized dog on his lap throughout the pursuit. Responding deputies secured the dog and placed the operator, Trae T. Salisbury, age 29 of Binghamton, NY, under arrest.
Salisbury allegedly admitted to deputies that he had methamphetamine inside his backpack and a small vial was found containing a white, crystal-like substance, which tested positive for methamphetamine.
Following the investigation, Trae T. Salisbury was charged with:
– Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle in the 3rd Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor
– Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor,
– Obstruction of Governmental Administration in the 2nd Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor
– Carrying an Animal in a Cruel Manner, a Misdemeanor
– Numerous traffic violations
Salisbury was processed at the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and issued appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Kirkwood Court. The dog was transported back to its owner, a relative of Salisbury, in the City of Binghamton.
