New York City says charges alleged by Broome County are false. County Executive Jason Garnar recently held a press conference accusing New York City of shipping its homeless population upstate. City officials have responded by saying those accusations are ‘patently false. New York City Department of Social Services Commissioner, Steven Banks, says New York is not violating the law. In a letter to Broome County, Banks said there are 20 households in their system with a last known address in Broome County. The city’s SOTA program provides one year of rent paid in advance to those who qualify for the assistance… which stipulates moving out of the city. Banks offered to discuss the matter, but Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said it was obvious that New York City would not change their practices and that Broome County will see them in court.
