40% of the prisoners remanded to the Broome county Jail have a substance abuse disorder. Yesterday, State Senator Fred Akshar announced a $400,000 grant to provide assistance to help the inmates in the detoxification process. After discharge from the jail, they would be referred to a treatment provider. A Request for Proposals has been issued to select the healthcare provider. Responses are due to be submitted by August 1st.
