Colesville man pleads guilty to murder after shooting newborn daughter with crossbow

A Colesville man has pleaded guilty to murder in the second degree in Broome County Court.

According to the Broome County District Attorney’s Office, Patrick D. Proefriedt could face a sentence of up to life in state prison following his plea.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to residence on Route 41 in Colesville on June 26, 2023 for a report of a shooting.

The investigation revealed that Proefriedt shot his wife and newborn daughter with a crossbow. The child was pronounced dead at the scene, while the wife was released from the hospital later that day with non-life-threatening injuries.

Proefriedt will be sentenced on May 22.
