Broome County District Attorney F. Paul Battisti announced today that Matthew S. Bartosik, 21, of Conklin, pled guilty as charged in a fourteen-count indictment before the Hon. Joseph F. Cawley in Broome County Court.
Bartosik pled guilty to the following:
- Count 1: Murder
- Counts 2–5: Attempted Murder
- Counts 6–8: Attempted Murder in the First Degree of a Police Officer
- Counts 9–12: Criminal Use of a Firearm in the First Degree
- Count 13: Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree
- Count 14: Assault in the First Degree
The conviction stems from an incident on January 3, 2025, when the New York State Police and the Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to 58 Leslie Avenue in the Town of Conklin for a reported domestic complaint.
The investigation revealed that a family argument escalated, during which Bartosik shot his uncle, Michael Lewis, multiple times, causing his death. Bartosik also shot Jessica Lewis, his cousin, multiple times, about the head and back. She was transported to the hospital where she underwent surgery and survived. As members of Law Enforcement approached the door in an effort to reach the barricaded victims and apprehend the suspect, Bartosik fired at the responding officers.
Shortly thereafter, Bartosik exited the residence with his hands in the air, holding what appeared to be a small silver-colored pistol, which he then dropped to the ground. He was taken into custody without further incident. Upon arrest, Bartosik stated in sum and substance to officers, “took long enough.”
“This was an extremely dangerous and violent situation, and it is nothing short of a miracle that no members of Law Enforcement were killed that day. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of Michael Lewis for their heartbreaking loss, and to Jessica Lewis as she continues to recover. Bartosik’s actions showed a complete disregard for human life, including the lives of those sworn to protect our community. This plea ensures that the Defendant will be held fully accountable for his actions and that justice is served for the victims, their loved ones, and the brave members of Law Enforcement who risked their lives responding to this incident,” 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐅. Bartosik is scheduled to be sentenced on November 14, 2025, in Broome County Court and faces a sentence of up to 50 years to life in New York State Prison.
This case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Clair Pelella with assistance from District Attorney Investigator, Robert Fimbres and investigated by the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police.
