Guilty verdict in attempted murder of NYS Trooper could put Nineveh man away for life

(Binghamton, NY) – A Broome County Jury returned guilty verdicts Monday against Jason D. Johnson, 35, of Nineveh, who was on trial in Broome County Court on nine charges related to the attempted murder of a police officer.

On June 9, 2021, in the Town of Colesville, prosecutors said Johnson attempted to cause the death of members of the New York State Police, when he fired upon them with a high-powered hunting rifle. Troopers had been dispatched to a residence on East Windsor Road for a check the welfare call.

Trooper Becky Seager was shot in the hip and required treatment at UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

After the shootout, Johnson fled the scene on foot into the woods around the residence. Police searched the area for 20 hours before finding Johnson along the Susquehanna River in Colesville.

Johnson could get life in a state prison when he is sentenced by Judge Joseph F. Cawley on November 28 in Broome County Court.

The case was prosecuted by Broome County District Attorney Michael A. Korchak and Senior Assistant District Attorney Lucas W. Finley.
