The Broome County District Attorney’s Office has announced that a Maine resident has pleaded guilty in connection with a fatal accident and attempted rape.
According to the DA’s office, 21-year-old Christian Rogler pleaded guilty to fleeing from a fatal accident and attempted rape in the first degree.
Police said Rogler engaged in an attempted sexual assault of an underage person in Johnson City back in 2021.
Rogler will receive 3 ½ years in a New York State prison followed by 10 years of post-release supervision as part of his plea. He will also be required to register as a sex offender and an order of protection will be issued.
In September of 2024, Rogler was driving when he hit Jamel Smalls of Binghamton and fled the scene of the crash, which occurred in Dickinson.
He will be sentenced to 2 1/3 to 7 years in state prison, which is the maximum sentence allowed. The sentences will be run concurrently.
Rogler will be sentenced on May 28.
