NY State Prisons to offer free phone calls starting Aug. 1

New York State will soon make all phone calls free in its state prisons.

Currently, inmates are allowed three free, 15-minute calls each week. After that, the calls cost about 2.4 cents per minute.

Starting on Aug. 1, the state corrections department will be lifting that fee.

Officials say the move will eliminate financial barriers to communication and aims to strengthen the vital connections between incarcerated individuals and their loved ones.
