NYSP warn about rising number of scams

The New York State Police say complaints of computer and phone scams are on the rise and are warning the public to be careful.

One scam recently reported to Troop C investigators involved a pop-up alert appearing to come from Apple with a number to call. When the victim called the number, they were told their account was linked to child pornography and their personal information was on the dark web. They were then provided another number claiming to be the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Anti-Fraud Division, which arranged a courier to pick up money at the victim’s house to fix the problem.

Police say scammers try to manipulate emotions and create a sense of urgency with their victims. Some recent victims have lost thousands of dollars and even their life savings.

Police warn to never share your personal information with unknown callers and be wary of any calls from a tech company telling you to call a different number.
