Broome-Tioga BOCES will celebrate its expanded Licensed Practical Nursing program with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, October 27. The event is scheduled for 1 PM at the program's new facility at 36 First Street in Johnson City.
The $4 million project converted the former Johnson City High School gymnasium into a 15,000-square-foot nursing education facility. According to BOCES, the move triples the program's instructional capacity. The facility welcomed its first students in September 2026 and currently serves approximately 90 students.
The converted space includes two traditional classrooms, a clinical laboratory and a simulation laboratory equipped with high-technology patient mannequins. Students also have access to a library, shared cafeteria and collaboration space.
BOCES describes the expansion as an investment in workforce development that gives adults more opportunities to enter practical nursing while helping address regional demand for qualified health-care workers. The new instructional and simulation spaces are part of the program's preparation for that work.
The project received support in part from federal Community Project Funding and New York State's Downtown Revitalization Initiative. Those are identified as contributing sources; the advisory does not assign a separate dollar amount to each funding stream.
The October 27 event is planned to include remarks from BOCES leaders, elected officials and project partners, followed by a ceremonial ribbon cutting and guided tours of the classrooms and laboratories. BOCES also plans opportunities for media interviews about the expansion and its place in the region's health-care workforce pipeline.
The ceremony is a scheduled dedication of a facility already in use. Students began attending in September, so the October event should not be confused with the program's first day of instruction.
