A former Broome-Tioga BOCES employee is facing misdemeanor charges after an investigation into inappropriate conduct with a BOCES student.

On Wednesday, November 12, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office received a referral from the New York State Child Abuse Hotline regarding inappropriate conduct between a juvenile student and a member of the Broome-Tioga BOCES faculty.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office detectives immediately began an investigation into the referral, conducting multiple interviews with students, family members as well as staff and faculty members. BCSO detectives also worked closely with Broome-Tioga BOCES administrative staff as the investigation unfolded.

Following the investigation, Evan J. Thorson, age 51 of Endicott, NY, was charged with Child Endangerment and Official Misconduct, Class A Misdemeanors. A warrant, along with an Order of Protection was issued by the Town of Dickinson Court. Thorson turned himself in and was processed on Monday, January 5.

“The safety, security and well-being of our students and school community remain our highest priorities,” said Broome-Tioga BOCES Superintendent Rebecca Stone. “As soon as we learned of the allegations, we took immediate action by placing the individual on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. That individual is no longer employed by Broome-Tioga BOCES. We are cooperating with law enforcement and will continue to do so throughout the legal process.”
