JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. — The former Johnson City High School gymnasium is being transformed into a new training center for healthcare workers.

Broome-Tioga BOCES plans to house its Licensed Practical Nursing, Phlebotomy, and Sterile Processing programs at the site as part of a $4 million project funded by Broome County, New York State, and federal support.

Officials say the expansion will significantly increase capacity, growing the nursing program from 30 to 90 full-time students.

The new facility is part of a broader effort to strengthen healthcare education and workforce development in the region, which already includes nearby medical and academic institutions.

Program leaders say the training offers a shorter pathway for students to enter the healthcare field, with strong outcomes including high certification pass rates.

Construction is expected to be completed by May 1, with students beginning classes at the site in September. Applications for the nursing program are open through April 1.
