The Village of Owego and Tioga Arts Council unveiled a new mural honoring a legendary area street musician on Thursday.

The mural honors musician, instrument maker and avant-garde composer Moondog.

Also known as Louis Hardin, the musician was originally from Kansas but had a home in Candor, and frequently took the bus from Owego to New York City.

Moondog was blinded by an accident as a teenager and learned how to play instruments by ear or using Braille.

Artist Michelle Schleider created the mural on the side of the building at 72 North Avenue in Owego.

Moondog passed away in 1999 at the age of 83.
